Academic to provide coverage to retired healthcare professionals volunteering during the COVID-19 Pandemic

To support the request for more retired healthcare providers in New York to assist in the current crisis, Academic will be offering medical professional liability insurance – at no additional cost – to those healthcare providers who retired while being covered by Academic and who will be volunteering to provide care during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Will this affect my free tail I obtained when I retired?

No – These volunteer services will not affect your free tail.
What are “volunteer services”?

We define a volunteer as a retired healthcare insured providing professional services for no fee, salary, or other compensation except for the reimbursement for expenses incurred delivering those services.
What limits of liability will I have under this coverage?

Your limits will be the same as when you were last insured by Academic.
Will defense cost be covered?

Yes. If a malpractice action is filed against you, defense costs will be paid in addition to the limits of liability.
Are regulatory and/or administrative actions covered?

Yes. If the returning healthcare provider previously had this coverage then you will be covered for these types of actions occurring from their volunteer professional services provided during the COVID-19 pandemic.
What will be the cost of this coverage?

There is no additional cost – it will be provided through your expired policy.
