  • What is the Academic Group?

The Academic Group consists of member-owned professional liability insurance companies owned and governed by physicians and allied medical and dental professionals to meet the unique needs of teaching faculty. The independent insurance companies operating under the Academic umbrella include Academic Health and Academic Medical. Academic Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Academic Health, provides a full array of insurance services to members, including underwriting, financial management and claims administration. The Group provides coverage to members through Academic Health in New York and nationally through the Vermont-based Academic Medical RRG.

  • Where is insurance from Academic Group available?

Academic provides insurance services to teaching physicians, dentists, residents, allied health professionals and private practitioners. Registration is available in 48 states (Virginia and Wisconsin are excluded) through its Vermont-based Risk Retention Group and affiliated companies.

  • Who qualifies for coverage?

Academic Health offers professional medical liability insurance to full-time medical and dental school faculty, residents, foreign physicians and allied healthcare professionals. Coverage may be designed for an entire medical school faculty, a clinical department, or, in some cases, for individual faculty members.

  • What types of coverage does the company offer?

    Occurrence Policy

This type of professional liability insurance coverage protects the insured applicant for claims that arise from alleged acts or events occurring during the period the insured applicant was covered by Academic.  This policy will cover all claims that occur after the inception date and before the termination date of the policy (i.e., the period for which the insured applicant was covered) even after the insured applicant withdraws from Academic.

    Claims-Made Policy

This type of professional liability coverage protects the insured applicant for alleged acts or events of malpractice which both occur and are reported to Academic while their claims-made policy is in force.  If the date of injury/loss falls within the period between the Retroactive Date and the end of the yearly policy period, and the claim is made and reported within the policy period, Academic will cover the insured applicant.  Unless otherwise specified the Retroactive Date of Coverage represents the effective date of the first claims-made policy.

Extended Discovery Period “Tail” Endorsement (Stand-Alone-Tail)

An extended discovery period (tail) endorsement is available for insured applicants to purchase when their claims-made policy expires, cancels or non-renews.  This endorsement, when purchased and attached to the insured applicant’s last claims-made policy, will allow that policy to accept claims brought against the insured that occurred after the Retroactive Date of coverage and the expiration, cancellation or non-renewal date of the last claims-made policy regardless of when reported.  The endorsement provides coverage for an indefinite period of time and the cost is based on the length of time the claims-made policy was in force.
